Jesus, Our Good Shepherd – Weekly Sermon Devotions

Day 1: Active Love Calls Us Outward

The love of the Good Shepherd is not a passive feeling but a compelling force that drives believers to action. It is a love that does not wait for the lost to come but actively seeks them out, breaking through barriers and extending the invitation of the gospel to all corners of the earth. This love is exemplified in the life and mission of Jesus, who did not stay within the confines of comfort but reached out to all in need.

Hebrews 13:12-13 - "And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood. Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore."

Reflection: How can you embody the active love of the Good Shepherd in your community today? What specific action can you take to reach out to someone in need of the gospel?

Day 2: Anchored in Resurrection Hope

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the bedrock of Christian hope, providing a steadfast anchor for the soul. This hope is not a wishful thought but a confident assurance that affects how believers live in the present. It is a hope that sustains through trials, empowers service, and fuels a life of purpose, knowing that the same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work within us.

1 Peter 1:3-4 - "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade."

Reflection: In what ways does the hope of the resurrection shape your daily life? Are there areas where you need to more fully embrace this hope?

Day 3: Known by the Shepherd

The Good Shepherd knows His sheep intimately, by name, nature, and need. This profound knowledge assures believers that they are not anonymous entities in a vast universe but cherished individuals in a personal relationship with their Creator. This relationship is the foundation of our identity and the source of our security, as we are known fully and loved deeply by the Shepherd who laid down His life for us.

John 10:14-15 - "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep."

Reflection: Reflect on the truth that you are known intimately by Jesus. How does this knowledge affect your sense of identity and worth?

Day 4: Gospel Unity Transcends Barriers

The love of the Good Shepherd reaches beyond any human-made divisions, uniting a diverse flock under His care. The gospel breaks down walls of ethnicity, culture, and social status, calling us to embrace our identity as one people with one Shepherd. This unity is a powerful testimony to the world of the reconciling work of Christ and the inclusive nature of God’s kingdom.

Ephesians 2:14-16 - "For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace."

Reflection: How can you contribute to the unity of the body of Christ in your local church and community? Are there barriers you need to help break down?

Day 5: Surrender to the Shepherd’s Love

The love of the Good Shepherd is the only source of true satisfaction and fulfillment for the human soul. The world offers many substitutes, but they are temporary and ultimately leave us wanting. Surrendering to the love of Jesus means laying down our own agendas, desires, and pursuits at the foot of the cross, finding our purpose, and embracing the life that He offers in its fullness.

Psalm 63:3 - "Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you."

Reflection: What worldly pursuits have you been chasing after for satisfaction? How can you surrender these to find fulfillment in the love of the Good Shepherd?
